2017 Highlander

SUVs seem to get smaller with each passing year. That's good news for some people, but for those of us with larger families, bigger really is better. The 2017 Toyota Highlander has all the advantages of a three-row SUV, plus one more: many of the Northridge area families served by Keyes Toyota find that it's just the right size for them.

2017 Toyota Highlander Details

The 2017 Toyota Highlander steps out with a new look. The bumpers, headlights, and taillights are re-done. There's also an SE trim level that adds nicer wheels, sport suspension, and a look that lives up to the name. The old V-6 engine has been traded for one that's shared with the Toyota Tacoma, and the old six-speed transmission has been replaced with an eight-speed automatic.

Aside from the new SE trim, the other trims carry over from last year. The gas-powered trims (LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, and Limited) all come with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional. The three hybrid trims (LE, XLE, and Limited) all have standard all-wheel drive. The engine in the base trim is a 185 horsepower four-cylinder engine. We suggest opting for the LE Plus trim or higher, since the V-6, which has 295 horsepower and 263 lb.-ft. of torque, is standard. The larger engine is more economical, especially with the start-stop technology available on the higher trim levels. More importantly, you'll feel the difference when you drive.

2017 Toyota Highlander Safety and Special Features

As with many other new Toyota SUVs, the Toyota Highlander already had the Star Safety System (ABS, traction control, and vehicle stability control). This year, it adds the Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety features, so you get lane departure warning, steering assist, active cruise control, and other features. No wonder the 2017 Toyota Highlander has an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus rating, and a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA.

Other great features include options like second-row captain's chairs (which change the seating capacity from eight to seven passengers), keyless entry, keyless start, leather seating and accents, and heated front seats. Upper trim levels get a more deluxe version of the Toyota Entune™ infotainment system, Premium Audio integrates navigation and better app compatibility to ensure a more connected ride.
