The Toyota Prius has proven so popular that it's become a victim of its own success. People tend to forget that there are many Toyota Prius models. It's not a generic description for Toyota hybrids. Similarly, the Toyota Prius Prime is far from a generic plug-in hybrid. It's Toyota Motor Corporation's second attempt at a plug-in hybrid, and is a vast improvement on its predecessor. Here's what to expect when you test drive it at Keyes Toyota.
2017 Toyota Prius Prime Details
The first Toyota plug-in hybrid was the Toyota Prius PHV, which was available around Los Angeles, CA between 2012 and 2015. While the two cars are related, they're also very different from each other.
The first change to the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime is noticeable to the naked eye. The body is lower, longer, and wider. Not only does this reduce the drag coefficient, it also makes for a more attractive car. Other changes aren't as readily apparent, but are still important. The body uses more aluminum for lighter weight and more efficiency. There's a new battery pack that delivers 88 kWh (that's twice as much as the PHV) for a quick two-hour charging time and a 22-mile all-electric range.
The power train consists of a 1.8 liter Atkinson Cycle engine and two electric motors, plus a CVT. With 121 net horsepower and an 84 mile per hour top speed, it's not exactly a track car. But it's uniquely suited to everyday urban driving, and if most of your driving is local, you could theoretically go weeks at a time without seeing a gas pump.
2017 Toyota Prius Prime Safety and Special Features
There are three trim levels available (Plus, Premium, and Advanced), each well-equipped. We suggest the Toyota Prius Prime Advanced, since it has the best feature set of the three. You get the Toyota Safety Connect app (with emergency assistance, roadside assistance, collision notification, and a stolen vehicle locator). You'll also have a rooftop solar array that powers key features without sacrificing range, plus Qi wireless smartphone charging and upgraded Entune™ Premium JBL® Audio with an 11.6-in. HD multimedia display.
With so much innovation, don't think that the fundamentals were overlooked. Like other new Toyota hybrids, safety comes standard. Don't take our word for it. Between the Toyota STAR safety suite, active safety features, and robust construction, it's no surprise that the Toyota Prius Prime earns both an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus and a five-star NHTSA safety rating.
Buying a 2017 Toyota Prius Prime
There's only one possible drawback: seating. The 2017 Toyota Prius Prime has a 2+2 layout, so if you have a larger family, this won't be your everyday drive. However, for lots of people -- especially those whose drive is mostly local around Downtown Los Angeles or Mission Hills -- the Toyota Prius Prime could be just about perfect.
